Vintage Louis XVI Style Single Wall Sconce with Hunting Horn Arm and Crossed Arrows
Two arrows cross behind a small round boss, and a hunting horn curls out in front of them to hold the light. This sconce is a little piece of country-house decoration, made for a study, a hallway or a boot room.
The sconce is a single wall light. Two slim arrows, with feathered tails and pointed heads, pass through a half-sphere boss that fixes to the wall. The arm is shaped like a hunting horn: the mouthpiece sits below the boss, the tube coils into a scroll, and the flared bell at the top forms the cup for the light socket. Crossed arrows were a favourite motif in Louis XVI decoration. They were borrowed from Cupid, whose arrows stood for love, and often appeared with quivers, torches and ribbons.
The sconce is in good vintage condition. The gilding is worn, with darker spots and the base metal showing through in places. The old wiring reaches us as found. It has plenty of years of service left. It suits a narrow wall beside a door, or a pair of shelves where one light is enough.
