Vintage Louis XVI Style Wall Sconce with Knotted Drapery and Tassels, Gilt Metal, Two Candle Lights, 45 cm
In eighteenth-century Paris, a whole trade was devoted to tassels, cords and braids. These craftsmen, the passementiers, made the trimmings that tied back curtains, hung from bell pulls and edged the finest upholstery. Their work was so admired that Louis XVI designers began to copy it in metal, turning soft silk cords and tassels into permanent ornaments on furniture and light fittings.
This wall sconce is a lovely example of that idea. Its backplate is a length of draped fabric, rendered in gilt metal, hanging from a small rosette at the top. Halfway down, the drapery is gathered into a twisted knot, and below it the two ends fall to finish in a pair of fringed tassels. From the knot, two reeded arms curve out and up in a graceful U-shape, each ending in a flower-edged bobèche and a fluted candle cup with a drip-effect sleeve.
The sconce is in good condition, with a warm gilt finish that has mellowed with age. Its knot and tassels reward a closer look, so it is best hung where people will stop beside it. It makes a charming reading light beside a bed, or a soft light above a writing desk.
