Vintage Mid-Century Modern Abstract Brass-Tone Seagull Sculpture
A seagull reduced to a few sweeping curves of polished brass-tone metal, its beak tilted up into the wind. This little sculpture catches the light and the feeling of flight in one gesture.
The bird is a single cast form. A long, tapering neck and beak angle upward from a compact head, while the body folds down into a pointed, twisting base. An open loop of metal behind it suggests a wing pulled back in mid-turn. There are no feathers or other details, only smooth planes and edges that change as you walk around it. This pared-down approach owes a lot to Constantin Brâncuși's "Bird in Space" of 1923, which stripped a bird down to the idea of flight. Mid-century designers followed his lead in countless small sculptures like this one.
The sculpture is in good vintage condition, with a bright shine and a light patina with some spotting, mostly on the lower part. It stands steadily on its base. It's ready to sit on a shelf, a desk or a mantel for years to come, and it's heavy enough to work as a paperweight.
