Vintage Mirror-Image Pair of Louis XV Style Wall Sconces, Gilt Metal Pierced Scrolls, Two Candle Lights Each, 30 cm
In eighteenth-century France, a wall light was poetically called a bras de lumière, an “arm of light.” It was usually fixed at about head height, so that its glow fell on the faces of people talking, reading or playing cards beside it. That human scale is one reason these lights still feel so natural in a room today.
This pair of wall sconces is in the Louis XV style. Each one rises from a slender, scrolled tail to a central body of curling leaves, with a pierced scroll curving out at one side. Two arms reach out from it, each ending in a leafy bobèche and a drip-effect candle sleeve. Each sconce is asymmetrical, and the two are made as mirror images, so that one leans left and the other right, framing whatever stands between them.
The sconces are in good condition, with a warm gilt finish. They have already hung side by side as a pair, and we would like them to move house together. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They work beautifully either side of a bedhead or a mirror, at about shoulder height.
In short, this is a vintage mirror-image pair of Louis XV style wall sconces in gilt metal, with pierced scrolls and two candle lights each. Each is 30 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.
