Modernist sculptors discovered that the fewer marks they made, the more a figure could say. A head became a smooth oval, an arm a single curve, a whole body one long rising line. What was left was not a likeness but a feeling: of stillness, of reaching, of a person poised between rest and movement.
This vintage sculpture is a striking example of that idea. A slender figure rises from a small round base, the body drawn up in one long, gently curving column to a small, smooth head. From the shoulders, the arm sweeps out into a wide open loop that ends in a tapering point, so the whole gesture reads like a figure looking out across distance. The sculptor balances the form on a single narrow stem, a sculptural cantilever that makes a solid metal figure seem almost weightless. The warm gold-tone surface follows every curve and catches the light along its edges.
The sculpture reaches us in good overall condition, with light tarnish softening its surface and a few small scattered marks. It is a piece that will repay a little care and a place where its open silhouette can be seen against a plain wall. It suits a mantel, a console table or a bookshelf with room to breathe around it.
