Vintage Mother and Child Abstract Sculpture, Gold-Tone Metal Maternité Figure, Modernist Mid-Century Style, 17 cm
The mother and child is one of the oldest subjects in art, found in carved stone and painted altarpieces long before it reached the modern studio. In the twentieth century, sculptors returned to it with fresh eyes. They let go of detail and kept only what mattered: the curve of a body bending toward another, the closeness of two figures who are almost one.
This vintage sculpture distils the theme to a few flowing forms. The mother rises in a single tall sweep, one arm lifted in an open loop above a smooth, rounded head. Her body curves down to enfold the small figure of the child seated against her. The sculptor works with negative space, letting the open shapes of air carry as much meaning as the metal itself, so the embrace is read as much in the gaps as in the solid forms. Polished to a warm gold tone, the surface catches the light along every curve.
The sculpture reaches us in good overall condition, its polished surface intact. It has the quiet presence of a piece that was kept close and valued, and it deserves a place where it can be seen every day. It sits beautifully on a bookshelf, mantel or desk, and makes a thoughtful gift to mark the arrival of a new child.
In short, this is a vintage abstract mother-and-child sculpture in polished gold-tone metal, in the modernist mid-century style. It stands 17 cm tall and is exactly as pictured.
