Vintage Napoleon III Style Small Black and Gilt Metal Table Lamp Base, Figural Stem on Square Footed Base

Glossy black against warm gold gives this small lamp a rich, formal look. A tiny gilt figure holds up the black body like a pedestal.

The lamp base has a rounded, glossy black body with a flared top edged in gilt metal. Beneath it, a leafy gilt cup rests on a small gilt figure, standing on a round socle with a gadrooned band and a square stepped base on bracket feet. In the Napoleon III period, decorators loved to pair black, such as ebonised wood, black marble or black opaline glass, with gilt metal. The dark ground makes the gold look brighter.

The lamp base is in very good vintage condition. It will be fully rewired in our workshop before dispatch. It has been well cared for, and it's ready for a new room. Its small size suits a bedside table, a mantelpiece or a bookshelf.

Lamp at a glance: a small black and gilt metal lamp base with a figural stem and a square footed base.
