When European designers rediscovered ancient Greece and Rome in the late eighteenth century, they brought back a whole vocabulary of classical ornament: rows of beads, shells and fans, and slender columns rising to shallow bowls. The style, known as Neoclassical, was revived again and again over the following century, because its calm proportions suited every kind of room and table.
This footed dish is in that tradition. A wide, shallow bowl sits on a tall trumpet-shaped stem, encircled at its middle by a moulded collar, and rests on a stepped round foot. The rim is edged with a fine rope border and set with small applied shell motifs, and a beaded band runs around the foot. Its form is a tazza: a shallow dish raised on a stem, named from the Italian word for cup, which Renaissance makers prized for displaying fruit and sweets as if on a small stage.
The tazza reaches us with wear throughout, as pictured. The bowl has a rich, mottled patina with traces of its silver-tone finish, and there are marks and darker spots on the stem and foot. That surface tells a long story of use, and we have left it untouched, so you can enjoy its character as it is. It makes an atmospheric centerpiece on a sideboard or mantel, holding pine cones, a few candles or simply standing alone.
