Vintage Pair of Art Deco Leaping Deer Bookends, Gilt-Tone Spelter on Black Marble Bases, 9 cm
Speed and grace were favourite themes of the Art Deco years. Designers loved animals in motion, such as greyhounds racing, horses galloping and deer leaping through tall grass, because they captured the energy of the modern age. Small sculptures like these were made for the shelves and desks of fashionable homes, where they brought a touch of elegance to everyday objects.
This pair of bookends is in that Art Deco style. On each one, a slender deer leaps forward out of a clump of tall, curving grasses, its legs stretched out in full flight. The figures face each other, so that, set at either end of a row of books, they seem to leap toward one another. They are cast in spelter, a zinc alloy that Art Deco makers used to produce fine detailed sculpture more affordably than bronze, here finished with a gilt-tone patina. Each figure stands on a block of black marble with white veining.
The bookends are in very good condition. They are ready to hold a row of favourite books on a shelf, a desk or a mantel, and they make a charming gift for a book lover.
