Vintage Pair of Brass-Tone Carriage Lanterns with Oval Glass Fronts and Wall Brackets

On a dark country road, a pair of lanterns on either side of a coach told everyone what was coming. This pair keeps that look, complete with the brackets that once held them in place.

Each lantern has an oval glass front set in a deep, rounded brass-toned frame, with smaller glass panels on the sides. On top is a vented cap with a turned finial, and below is a long tube that held the candle. Each comes with its own wall bracket: a shaped plate with a ring that the tube drops into, so the lantern can be lifted out. Inside, a round reflector sits behind the candle position. Carriage lanterns often had a polished reflector like this to throw the small candle flame forward through the front glass, making it look much brighter from a distance.

The pair is in very good vintage condition. They have stayed together, brackets and all, and are ready to hang again. Mount them either side of a front door, in a covered porch, or in a hallway or tack room.

Oval-glass pair: two brass-tone carriage lanterns with oval glass fronts, reflectors and wall brackets, sold as a pair.
