In the early nineteenth century, Europe fell in love with the ancient world all over again. Napoleon's campaigns in Egypt and the excavations of Roman cities filled designers' sketchbooks with columns, urns and processions of figures. The style that grew from it, known as Empire, gave even the household candlestick the dignity of a small classical monument, and it was revived and admired for generations afterward.
This pair of candlesticks carries that classical language in every part. Each rises from a broad, stepped round base to a slender column, encircled at its lower part by a band of figures in relief above a border of pointed leaves. At the top, the candle cup takes the shape of a classical urn, a form borrowed from the bell-shaped vases of antiquity, in which the cup flares at the rim and narrows to a rounded body. The whole profile is balanced and architectural, and as a matched pair they frame a mantel or table with a quiet symmetry.
The candlesticks reach us in good condition for their age, with a warm copper-tone patina and small marks from years of use. They have clearly lit many evenings, and they are ready to light many more. They look their best at either end of a mantelpiece or flanking a centerpiece on the dining table.
