Vintage Pair of Empire Style Patinated Brass-Tone Candlesticks, Fluted Columns, Acanthus Collars and Foliate Bases

Two fluted columns, each crowned with a ring of curling leaves, stand on bases thick with cast flowers and scrolls. Their soft, darkened tone shows a long life of use.

Each candlestick is made of brass-tone metal with a mellow patina. A fluted column rises from a leaf-wrapped knop on a round base cast with scrolling foliage and edged with a band of leaf tips. At the top, a collar of acanthus leaves sits beneath an urn-shaped nozzle with banded rims and a flat drip pan. An old Roman story tells how the sculptor Callimachus saw acanthus leaves growing up around a basket left on a young girl's grave. He used the shape for the top of a column, and the acanthus became the most copied leaf in Western decoration.

The candlesticks are in good vintage condition, with signs of use and an even, darkened patina. They have brightened many rooms already, and they're ready to brighten another. They suit a mantelpiece, a dining table, a console or a sideboard.
