Vintage Pair of Fireplace Andirons, Louis XIV Style, Turned Brass-Tone Finials on Iron Log Supports, 20 cm
For centuries, the open fireplace was the heart of the European home, and andirons were its quiet workhorses. Placed in pairs on the hearth, they held the logs off the floor so that air could flow underneath and the fire would burn well. Because they faced the room, their fronts were made decorative, and they became a small showpiece in every fireplace.
This pair of andirons is in the Louis XIV style. At the front of each stands a turned finial shaped like a spinning top, rising through stepped rings from a round, layered base to a pointed tip. Behind it runs a long iron support, triangular in section, on which the logs rest. The finials face the room, while the iron supports do the work of holding the fire.
The andirons are in good overall condition, with a deep patina from years of use. The finials show the marks of age, and the iron supports have light corrosion, as is normal for pieces that have stood in a working fireplace. They can return to a working hearth, or simply stand in an unused fireplace as a decorative feature.
