Vintage Pair of Flemish Style Brass-Tone Single-Arm Wall Sconces with Polished Ball

A round polished ball at the heart of a brass light has been a sign of warm, old-fashioned comfort since the Dutch Golden Age, and this pair carries that look onto the wall.

Each sconce has a short turned back with a pointed finial at the top, a large polished ball in the middle and a small drop below. A single curved arm loops out from the back and rises to a round drip pan holding a cream candle sleeve with a wax-drip effect. Dutch and Flemish brass chandeliers of the 1600s were built around big polished balls for a practical reason. The curved surface caught and reflected the candlelight, so the whole room seemed brighter.

The sconces are in very good vintage condition, and the old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept together as a pair and are ready for a new wall. Hang them either side of a bed, a fireplace or a hallway mirror.
