Vintage Pair of French Black and Brass-Tone Torch Wall Sconces with Glass Globes

Shaped like small torches held out from the wall, these two give a classic idea a crisp, mid-century finish.

Each sconce has a round brass-toned wall plate and a short angled arm holding a tapering black shaft. The shaft is ringed with brass-toned bands and ends in a pointed brass-toned tip. At the top, a brass-toned cup holds a round glass globe, partly frosted, that glows like a flame when lit. Black against polished brass is an old French pairing. Furniture makers of the 1700s set gilt bronze against dark ebony, and lighting designers of the mid 20th century borrowed the same contrast in paint and brass.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, with tarnish on the brass-toned parts and light wear to the black finish. The old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept together as a pair and are ready for a new wall. Hang them either side of a fireplace, a mirror or a doorway.
