Vintage Pair of French Louis XVI Style Two-Arm Gilt Metal Wall Sconces with Acanthus Column Back Plates
These sconces have a short, sturdy column for a back plate, with crisp leafwork and a warm gilt finish. They bring a tailored, classic look to a library, a dining room or a bedroom wall.
The back plate of each sconce is a column with a finely textured shaft. It swells at the base into a bulb of acanthus leaves, with a leafy bud finial above and a pine-cone drop below. Two scrolled arms, each with a small leaf crest, curve out from a round collar to drip pans edged with a laurel band and a fine beaded rim, holding cream candle sleeves. The row of tiny raised balls around each drip pan is called beading, or pearling. Louis XVI metalworkers ran it along edges because each bead catches its own point of light and makes the outline sparkle.
The pair is in very good vintage condition, with a clean, even finish. The old wiring reaches us as found. This pair has years of light ahead of it. Hang them either side of a mirror, a bookcase or a fireplace.
