Vintage Pair of French Louis XVI Style Two-Arm Bronze-Tone Wall Sconces with Acanthus Back Plates
A long, teardrop-shaped back plate gives each of these sconces a graceful, elongated outline. The pair adds a classic touch to a bedroom, a landing or a dining room wall.
At the centre of each back plate is a spray of acanthus leaves fanning out above a small scroll. Above it, a short chain of beaded drops hangs from the top. Two scrolled arms, wrapped in leaves, curve out from a turned collar to fluted cups that hold candle sleeves. A small leafy finial sits at the base. The beaded chain is a version of the husk or bellflower drop, a favourite Neoclassical motif. It's a string of tiny stylised flower buds, used to soften the straight lines of Louis XVI design.
The pair is in very good vintage condition, with an even bronze-tone finish and light marks on the candle sleeves. The old wiring reaches us as found. This pair is ready to give many more years of light. Hang them either side of a mirror or a bed, or space them along a hallway.
Husk-drop pair: two vintage French Louis XVI style bronze-tone wall sconces, each with two leafy scrolled arms and an acanthus back plate, rewired in our workshop and ready to install.
