Vintage Pair of Gilt Metal Wall Sconces with Faceted Glass DropsTwo Lights Each, Scrolled Arms and Arched Hoops, Early 20th Century, 33 cm

The first electric bulbs to reach French homes in the early twentieth century were far dimmer than today’s: a carbon-filament bulb gave a soft glow of roughly sixteen candles. Lighting makers had a clever way to make the most of it. They hung their wall lights with faceted glass drops, which caught the modest light and scattered it in bright flashes around the room, making a small bulb feel much grander.

This pair of wall sconces, attributed to the early twentieth century, uses that idea. Each has a scrolled gilt metal body, curling with leaves, from which two arms reach out to hold leaf-edged drip pans and white candle sleeves. Above, slender arched hoops rise over the lights, hung with flat, bevelled glass drops shaped like leaves, each fixed by a small glass rosette. More drops hang below the arms and the body, so the sconce is framed in glass from top to bottom.

The sconces have been fully restored and are in very good condition. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They bring a soft, sparkling light to a bedroom, a salon or either side of a mirror.

In short, this is a vintage pair of gilt metal wall sconces with faceted glass drops, scrolled arms and arched hoops, with two lights each, attributed to the early twentieth century. Each is 33 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.
