Vintage Pair of Girandole Wall Sconces, Attributed 19th Century, Gilt Metal with Faceted Glass Drops, Single Light, 33 cm
Before electricity, light was precious, and European decorators found clever ways to make the most of every candle. One was the girandole: a wall light hung with glass drops. Each drop works like a small prism, catching the flame and scattering it around the room in sparkles and flashes of colour. The idea was so beautiful that it has been loved ever since, long after candles gave way to bulbs.
This pair of girandole wall sconces is attributed to the nineteenth century. Each one has a gilt metal backplate cast with scrolls and leaves, holding a single candle-style light. Two curved arms rise above the light and two sweep out below it, each hung with faceted glass drops on small glass rosettes. More drops hang from the bobèche, the small dish beneath the candle. When the lights are on, the drops throw dancing points of light across the wall, just as they were designed to do.
The sconces are in good condition. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They bring a soft, romantic sparkle to a bedroom, a dining room or either side of a mirror.
In short, this is a vintage pair of single-light girandole wall sconces in gilt metal with faceted glass drops, attributed to the nineteenth century. Each is 33 cm tall overall, and they are exactly as pictured.
