At Versailles, Louis XIV’s designers created what became known as the grand style: bold, heavy forms meant to express power and order. Furniture and metalwork of the period favoured strong scrolls, solid geometric plates and a type of ornament called the pointe de diamant, a faceted boss that looks like a large cut gem. The style was revived many times, and it still gives a room a sense of weight and dignity.

This pair of wall sconces draws on that grand style. Each has a solid backplate with canted corners, decorated at its centre with a faceted, diamond-point boss. From it, two heavy C-scroll arms curve out and up, each ending in a wide, plain dish and a bulb holder. The polished brass gives the sconces a bright, warm shine, and their simple, strong lines suit both classic and modern rooms.

The sconces are in good condition, as pictured. Each weighs about 885 g, so they feel sturdy. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. Fitted with small clip-on shades, they suit a hallway, a dining room or a bedroom.
