Vintage Pair of Louis XV Rocaille Style Wall SconcesAttributed Mid-20th Century, Gilt Metal with Two Candle Lights Each, 30 cm

Of all the ornaments of classical design, few have lasted as long as the acanthus leaf. The ancient Greeks carved it onto the tops of Corinthian columns, and French designers of the Louis XV period wrapped it around everything from chairs to candlesticks. In the Rocaille style, the leaf was set free to curl and scroll, giving even a small wall light a sense of movement and life.

This pair of wall sconces is attributed to the mid-twentieth century and is in the Louis XV Rocaille style. Each one has a tall central body cast with acanthus leaves and scrolls, crowned by a flame-shaped finial and finished with a leafy drop below. Two scrolled arms sweep out to each side, holding leaf-edged bobèches with candle-style sleeves. The warm gilt finish brings out every curl of the leaves. Each sconce has two fixing points on the back, so it hangs securely on the wall.

The sconces are in very good condition. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They bring classic French charm to a dining room, a bedroom, a salon or a hallway.

In short, this is a vintage pair of Louis XV Rocaille style wall sconces in gilt metal, with acanthus scrolls and two candle lights each. They are attributed to the mid-twentieth century, each 30 cm wide, and exactly as pictured.
