Vintage Pair of Louis XV Rocaille Style Wall Sconces, Gilt Metal Acanthus Scrolls, Two Lights Each, Mirror-Image Pair, 45 cm
In the reign of Louis XV, French designers broke free from strict symmetry. They took inspiration from the shell and rockwork decoration of garden grottoes, called rocaille, and filled their designs with swirling scrolls, curling leaves and graceful, lively curves. The style, known abroad as Rococo, became the very image of eighteenth-century French elegance, and it has been made and loved ever since.
This pair of wall sconces is in that Louis XV Rocaille style. Each one is a flowing composition of gilt metal acanthus leaves and scrolls, sweeping upward from a pointed leaf at the base. Two curving arms reach out to hold round, leaf-edged bobèches and candle-style sleeves with a dripping-wax effect. In true Rococo fashion, each sconce is asymmetrical, and the pair is made as mirror images of each other, so that, placed either side of a mirror or a fireplace, they balance perfectly.
The sconces are in very good condition, with a warm gilt finish. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They bring classic French charm to a salon, a bedroom, a hallway or a library.
In short, this is a vintage mirror-image pair of Louis XV Rocaille style wall sconces in gilt metal, with acanthus scrolls and two lights each. Each is 45 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.
