Vintage Pair of Louis XV Rocaille Style Gilt Metal Wall Sconces, Leafy Scrolls with Flower Bobèches, Two Candle Lights Each, 44 cm
Metal wall lights in the Louis XV style are usually made by casting. Molten metal is poured into a mould, so that every leaf, curl and scroll is formed in one piece, and the finest details are then sharpened by hand before gilding. The method lets makers create ornament as rich and complex as carving, but strong enough to hold a light for generations.
This pair of wall sconces is in that Louis XV Rocaille style. Each one is built from layers of curling acanthus leaves, rising from a long, pointed leafy tail below. Two branches sweep up and out from the foliage like the stems of a plant, each ending in a bobèche shaped like an open flower, with a candle-style sleeve above. The gilt finish is bright and even, bringing out every leaf and curl. Each sconce is asymmetrical in the true Rococo manner.
The sconces are in very good condition. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They bring a rich, classic glow to a salon, a dining room or a bedroom, especially either side of a mirror or a fireplace.
In short, this is a vintage pair of Louis XV Rocaille style gilt metal wall sconces, with leafy scrolls, flower-shaped bobèches and two candle lights each. Each is about 44 cm long, and they are exactly as pictured.
