Vintage Pair of Louis XV Style Gilt Metal Two-Arm Wall Sconces with Cartouche Stem

A pair of sconces can give an entrance or a sitting room a warm, low light at eye level, the way candles once did.

Each sconce has a slim, tapering stem with an oval frame at its centre, topped by a small flame-shaped finial and ending in a short drop below. Two scrolled, leaf-cast arms reach out to the sides, and each holds a round drip pan and a cream plastic candle sleeve with a wax-drip effect. The oval frame is called a cartouche. It was first made to hold a coat of arms or an inscription, but on pieces like these it was left plain, as pure decoration.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, and the old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept as a pair over the years and are ready for a new home. They suit an entrance hall, a living room or the wall above a fireplace.
