Vintage Pair of Louis XV Style Gilt Metal Wall Sconces with Ruffled Frosted Glass Tulip Shades

Each of these lights blooms like a flower on the wall, with a frosted glass shade opening into soft, ruffled petals.

Each sconce has a small gilt back plate cast with curling leaves and scrolls. It holds a single light inside a frosted glass tulip shade. The shade is moulded inside with a dimpled pattern and opens out into a wide rim, waved and folded like petals. Rims like this were usually shaped while the glass was still soft and hot. The glassmaker pinched and crimped the edge by hand or with a tool, so no two shades come out exactly alike.

The sconces are in very good vintage condition, and the old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept together as a pair and are ready for a new wall. Hang them either side of a bed, a dressing table or a bathroom mirror.
