Vintage Pair of Louis XV Style Gilt Metal Two-Arm Wall Sconces with Shell Cartouche Stem

Curling arms, a shell and a swirl of leaves: this pair has all the movement of the Louis XV style in a size that fits an everyday wall.

Each sconce has a baluster stem decorated with scrolling leaves around a central shell, topped with a small finial and finished below with a leafy drop. Two scrolled arms swing out from the base of the stem. Each ends in a leaf-shaped drip pan, a cup cast with leaves and a candle sleeve with a wax-drip effect. The style is named after Louis XV, who reigned from 1715 to 1774. Its other name, rococo, came later and began as a gentle joke, joining "rocaille", the shell-and-rock work in grottoes, with "barocco", the Italian word for baroque.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, with light signs of use. The old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept together as a pair and are ready for a new wall. Hang them either side of a bed, a mirror or a fireplace.
