Vintage Pair of Louis XV Style Wall SconcesAttributed Late 19th–Early 20th Century, Gilt Metal Acanthus Crest, Two Lights Each, 36 cm

At the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900, one of the star attractions was the Palace of Electricity, glowing with thousands of bulbs. Electric light was the new marvel of the Belle Époque, yet many Parisians wanted it in the familiar forms of the past. Lighting makers answered with electric wall lights in the old Louis XV style, and these became a fixture of apartments across France.

This pair of wall sconces, attributed to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, comes from that moment. Each backplate is built from curling acanthus leaves, rising to a tall flame-like crest and sweeping down into a scrolled tail. Two arms curve out from it, each ending in a star-shaped leafy bobèche and an embossed candle cup with a drip-effect sleeve. The two are made as mirror images, so they balance each other on either side of a mirror or fireplace. Each was cast and finished individually, which is why their weights differ slightly: 1.33 kg and 1.38 kg.

The sconces are in good condition, with a warm gilt finish. Like every lamp we sell, they pass through our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They suit a salon, a dining room or a bedroom in a classic French style.

In short, this is a vintage mirror-image pair of Louis XV style wall sconces in gilt metal, with acanthus crests and two lights each, attributed to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Each is about 36 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.
