Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Brass-Tone Two-Arm Wall Sconces with Urn and Rosette

Clean lines and a little gold detail give this pair a quieter take on French classical style, at home in a modern room as much as a traditional one.

Each sconce has a smooth, tapering shaft ending in a small drop at the base. Above it is a square block set with a rosette and topped with a small leaf-cast urn. Two arms bend out at crisp angles, with a curl of leaves at each shoulder, and end in round drip pans and fluted candle cups with drip-style sleeves. The bright, polished surfaces contrast with matte gold on the urn, the rosette and under the drip pans. Playing shiny gold against dull gold was a long-standing French finishing method. It made the raised details stand out from across a room.

The sconces are in very good vintage condition, and the old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept together as a pair and are ready for a new home. Hang them in an entrance hall, a bedroom or either side of a fireplace.
