Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Brass-Tone Two-Arm Wall Sconces with Urn and Oak-Leaf Shaft

A small leafy urn on top, a fluted column in the middle and a panel of leaves running down the shaft: this pair layers classical details in a compact shape.

Each sconce has a tapering shaft with a recessed panel of leaves, a short fluted column section above it, and an urn with acanthus leaves and a flame finial on top. A pointed drop finishes the base. Two scrolled arms, edged with leaves and finished with a tight curl, swing out from the column, and each ends in a drip pan and a candle sleeve. The leaves on the shaft look like oak. In ancient Rome, a crown of oak leaves was given for saving a citizen's life, so oak became a classical sign of strength and civic courage.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, and the old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept together as a pair and are ready for a new wall. Hang them either side of a bed, a fireplace or a mirror.
