Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Brass Wall Sconces, Attributed 19th Century, Arrow and Swan-Neck Arms, Frosted Glass Tulips, 26 cm
Under Louis XVI, French decorators filled their rooms with graceful symbols borrowed from ancient Greece and Rome. Garlands, ribbons, pine cones and Cupid's arrows appeared on walls, furniture and light fittings. The style was so admired that it was revived again and again through the nineteenth century, especially for the elegant wall lights of Parisian apartments.
This pair of wall sconces is attributed to the nineteenth century and is in the Louis XVI style. Each one is fixed to the wall by a round rosette, through which passes a horizontal arrow, complete with a pointed tip and feathered flights. The arrow was a favourite Louis XVI ornament, a nod to Cupid and a symbol of love. Beneath the rosette, a small pine cone hangs as a finishing touch. From it, a swan-neck arm, decorated with leaf detail, curves out and down to hold a frosted, ribbed glass tulip shade.
The sconces reach us in very good condition, with a warm gilt-tone patina on the brass, and the glass tulips are free of cracks and chips. Like every lamp we sell, they pass through our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They bring a classic French elegance to a bedroom, a salon or a hallway.
In short, this is a vintage pair of Louis XVI style brass wall sconces with arrow and swan-neck arms and frosted ribbed glass tulip shades. They are attributed to the nineteenth century, each 26 cm tall, and exactly as pictured.
