Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Brass Candlesticks with Oak Leaf and Beaded Friezes, Bobèches, 26.5 cm
The French call a candlestick of this kind a flambeau, from the word for a torch, and for centuries it was the main source of evening light in an elegant home. Under Louis XVI, designers turned to the restrained ornament of ancient Greece and Rome, and the flambeau became a model of classical balance. The style proved so lasting that it was made and admired long after the king's reign, as the very picture of refined French taste.
This pair follows that model with care. Each candlestick rises from a round base banded with a frieze of knotted oak leaves, through a tapering baluster stem dressed with collars of acanthus and laurel, to an urn-shaped candle cup decorated with slender upright water leaves. Fine beaded borders run at every join. Each cup is finished with its removable drip pan, called a bobèche, which catches falling wax before it can reach the stem. The warm brass carries a soft patina that settles into the recesses and lifts the relief of every leaf.
The candlesticks reach us in good, stable condition, with a few small knocks and minor losses from use and one base slightly distorted. These are the honest marks of a pair that has been used and enjoyed, and they take nothing from its presence. They will look their best on a console, on a mantelpiece or set out on a dressed dining table.
