Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Gilt Metal Two-Arm Wall Sconces with Fluted Shaft and Rosettes

A bedroom with a sconce on each side of the bed feels balanced and calm. This pair was made for that kind of symmetry.

Each sconce has a tapering fluted shaft with small hanging leaf drops and a pointed leaf finial at the base. At the top is a flared crest shaped like a bundle of feathers, set above a small rosette. Two leafy scrolled arms curve out from the shaft, and each ends in a ribbed drip pan with a beaded edge and a cream candle sleeve. Many French sconces of this kind were cast in régule, also called spelter. It's a zinc alloy that foundries used from the 1800s as a cheaper alternative to bronze: it takes fine detail well but is lighter and softer.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, with light wear and a soft patina. The old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept together as a pair and are ready for their next room. They suit a bedroom, an entrance hall or a living room wall.
