Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Gilt Metal Two-Arm Wall Sconces with Fluted Shaft

Clean, upright and quietly gilded, this pair shows the restrained side of Louis XVI style, made to frame a mirror or a fireplace without fuss.

Each sconce has a tapering shaft with fluted panels, a small leafy finial at the top and a pointed leaf drop at the base. Two smooth arms bend out and up from the shaft, and each ends in a wide drip pan and a cream candle sleeve. Gilding on decorative metal changed a great deal in the 1800s. Electroplating gradually replaced mercury fire-gilding, whose fumes had harmed gilders for centuries, and made a gold finish safer and cheaper to apply.

The sconces are in very good vintage condition, with light wear to the tops of the drip pans. The old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept together as a pair and are ready for a new wall. Hang them either side of a fireplace, a mirror or a bed.
