Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Gilt Metal Arrow and Ribbon Two-Arm Wall Sconces

An arrow running straight down a wall makes a striking backbone for a light. On this pair, it gives each sconce a tall, slim outline that draws the eye upward.

Each sconce is built around a vertical arrow, with feathered fletching at the top and a pointed head at the bottom. A ribbon spirals around the shaft. At the centre, a tied bundle of leaves with a small rosette holds two leafy arms that curve out to the sides, with little curled volutes above. Each arm ends in a drip pan, a candle cup and a candle sleeve with a wax-drip effect. Ribbons wound around a shaft or tied in bows were a favourite Louis XVI detail. They were borrowed from the real silk ribbons used at the time to hang pictures and garlands on walls.

The sconces are in very good vintage condition. They have been kept with care as a pair and are ready to light another room. Their height suits a hallway, a staircase or either side of a tall mirror.

Arrow pair in brief: two gilt metal two-arm sconces built around an arrow with a spiralling ribbon, rewired and sold as a pair.
