Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Gilt Metal Two-Arm Wall Sconces with Urn and Garland Crest

On either side of a fireplace or a tall mirror, a matching pair of sconces brings balance to a wall. These two were made to do exactly that, one on each side.

Each sconce has a long, tapering back plate with leaf and bead detail, ending in a small drop at the base. At the top is an urn hung with draped garlands and crowned with a flame-like finial. Two scrolled arms curve out from the shaft, and each holds a leaf-cast drip pan and a candle sleeve. The urn with a flame rising from it, called a "pot à feu" in French, came from the altars and lamps of ancient Rome. Louis XVI designers used it as a sign of warmth and welcome.

The sconces are in good vintage condition. The gilt finish is dulled and would benefit from a gentle clean, and the old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept together as a pair for decades and are ready for another wall. They suit a hallway, a bedroom or either side of a fireplace.
