Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Two-Arm Gilt Metal Mirror Wall Sconces with Laurel Crests
A small rectangle of mirror glass sits at the heart of each sconce. When the lights are on, it catches their glow and throws it back into the room, so a narrow hallway or a cosy bedroom wall gets a little extra brightness.
Each sconce has a gilt frame around the mirror, topped by a crest of laurel leaves tied with a ribbon, with a spray of leaves hanging below. On each side, a reeded arm loops out and down to a small ball drop, then rises to a gadrooned cup holding a candle sleeve. Mirrored wall lights like these are often called girandoles. Before electricity, the glass behind the flame was a simple way to double the light from a single candle.
The pair is in good vintage condition, with light wear to the gilt finish and to the candle sleeves. The old wiring reaches us as found. They're ready to brighten a room again for many years. Hang them either side of a bed, a dressing table or a narrow doorway, where their compact size works well.
