Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Two-Arm Gilt Metal Wall Sconces with Flame-Topped Urn and Acanthus Scroll Arms
A twisted flame rises from a small urn at the centre of each sconce. Two leafy arms curve out from it to hold the lights, giving a warm, symmetrical frame to a mirror, a doorway or a fireplace.
Each sconce has a fluted, tapering back plate that ends in a leaf-wrapped drop with a small turned finial. Two arms sweep out from a square collar below the urn. Each arm is wrapped in curling acanthus leaves and carries a shaped drip pan, a scroll-chased candle cup and a cream candle sleeve. The gilding is shaded, darker in the hollows and brighter on the raised parts, which sharpens the cast detail. The acanthus is a real Mediterranean plant with deeply cut leaves. The ancient Greeks carved it on the tops of Corinthian columns, and it has stayed a favourite on decorative metalwork ever since.
The pair is in very good vintage condition, with even gilding and no bending to the arms or back plates. The candle sleeves show some marks and spotting. The old wiring reaches us as found. One sconce has small holes in its arms where the wire passes through; on the other, the wire runs along the arms and is glued in place. These two arms will hold their lights well for many more years. Hang them either side of a mirror or a bed.
