In French homes, the mantelpiece was traditionally dressed with a garniture de cheminée: a clock in the centre, flanked by a matching pair of candelabra. The arrangement gave the fireplace a balanced, formal look, and the candelabra provided light where the household gathered in the evening. Pairs like this one were made to play that role.
These two-light candelabra are in the Louis XVI style. Each stands on a round base decorated with a band of fluting and a ring of leaves, rising to a baluster stem wrapped in acanthus and topped with a fluted section. A beaded collar at the top supports two scrolled arms, each ending in a beaded drip pan and a fluted candle cup. In the centre, a small finial in the shape of a flame crowns the piece.
The candelabra are in good condition. Together they weigh 2.6 kg, so they feel solid and stand steadily. A practical point: the candle cups measure 23 mm across inside, so they take standard taper candles, including the 7/8-inch tapers common in the US. They are ideal on either side of a mantel clock or mirror, or set at each end of a dining table.
