In the 1950s and 1960s, designers fell in love with the shapes of nature. Chairs took the form of eggs and shells, tables were shaped like pebbles, and lamps became smooth, rounded globes. Alongside traditional brass, they happily used new materials such as hard plastics, valuing them for being clean, light and modern.
This pair of wall sconces shows that organic spirit at its simplest. Each one has a slim white rectangular base that fixes to the wall, from which a curved brass arm reaches out and turns up to hold a brass cup. In the cup sits an egg-shaped globe of white opal glass, smooth and satin-finished. The milky glass hides the bulb completely, so the whole egg glows with a soft, even light. Each globe is about the size of an ostrich egg.
The sconces are in good overall condition, with some marks of age. Each base is made of hard plastic, and the arms are brass. The light they give is gentle and calm, which makes them ideal beside a bed or on either side of a bathroom-free dressing area or a hallway mirror.
