Vintage Pair of Mid-Century Modernist Wall Sconces, Attributed 1950s–60s, Brass Crook Arms with White Satin Glass Shades, Pull-Cord Switches
In post-war France, many families moved into newly built apartments with compact bedrooms, where every inch of bedside space counted. The wall-mounted bedside light solved the problem neatly. It freed the nightstand, threw light exactly where a reader needed it, and with a pull cord within reach of the pillow, it could be switched off without getting out of bed. Designers of the 1950s turned this practical object into small, elegant pieces of modern design.
This pair of wall sconces, attributed to the 1950s–60s, shows that approach. Each has a slim, dark rectangular wall plate. From it, a polished brass arm curves up and over in a shepherd’s-crook shape to hold a tapered brass cone. The cone carries a wide shade of white satin glass, which softens the bulb into a gentle, even glow. Below the shade, a slender brass rod drops down and ends in a tapered grey tip, giving the sconce a long, graphic line. A fine pull cord with a small ivory-coloured bead hangs beside it.
The sconces have been fully restored, with the brass polished and lacquered and the metal parts repainted, and they are in excellent condition. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They are ideal either side of a bed, where the pull cords can be reached from the pillow.
