Vintage Pair of Neoclassical Curtain TiebacksAttributed Late 19th–Early 20th Century, Gilt Metal with Laurel Wreaths, 20 cm

In grand European homes, curtains were never simply pulled aside. They were drawn back in generous folds and held in place by tiebacks, which the French call embrasses. Because these sat at eye level on either side of every window, they were made as small pieces of decorative metalwork, matching the gilt mounts of the furniture and the frames of the mirrors.

This pair of curtain tiebacks is attributed to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century and is decorated with neoclassical motifs. Each one has a wall plate with a carved-look rosette, from which a projecting arm extends to hold a cup of leaves and fruit. Below it hangs a ring in the form of a laurel wreath. The laurel was the ancient Roman symbol of victory and honour, and it became one of the favourite ornaments of neoclassical design. The curtain rests in the curve of the arm, framed by the gilt foliage.

The tiebacks are in good condition, with a warm gilt finish. They can go straight to work on a pair of curtains, or be used as decorative hooks for hanging a tassel, a scarf or a small framed picture.
