Vintage Pair of Red Marble and Brass-Tone Metal CandlesticksBall Knop and Domed Base, Attributed 19th Century, 21.5 cm

The Pyrenees and the Languedoc in southern France have been quarried for coloured marble since Roman times. Their deep reds, flecked and speckled with grey and white, were among the most admired. One famous variety is called griotte, after the dark sour cherry it resembles. In the nineteenth century these stones were turned on the lathe into small luxuries for the home: clock cases, inkstands and candlesticks.

This pair of candlesticks shows off that kind of stone. Each one has three turned marble elements: a broad, domed base, a round ball knop at the centre of the stem, and a wide drip pan near the top. All three are in a rich oxblood red speckled with grey and white. The marble parts are joined by slender brass-tone metal stems with turned collars, and topped by a plain cylindrical candle cup with a moulded rim. Every piece of stone is slightly different, so the two candlesticks match in form while each has its own pattern.

The candlesticks are in good condition for their age. There is a small chip on the underside of one drip pan, visible in the photos. They make an unusual, warm-toned pair for a mantelpiece, a library shelf or a dining table lit by candles.
