In eighteenth-century Paris, the Martin brothers became famous for a lustrous varnish that imitated Asian lacquer. Known as vernis Martin, it was used on everything from carriages to snuffboxes, often painted with delicate flowers on soft-coloured grounds. The fashion for painted floral decoration framed in gilt metal lasted well into the following century, and it gave small decorative objects a light, feminine charm.

This pair of candelabra carries that charm. Each stands on a small rectangular base with a pale green painted ground, decorated with a bouquet of flowers: one with blue cornflowers and red blossoms, the other with roses and small blue flowers. The bases are framed by gilt metal Rocaille mounts, with shell-like scrolls and curving feet. From the top, a leafy stem rises to a spray of foliage, and two arms loop out to hold leaf-edged bobèches and fluted candle cups. The gilding carries a soft patina of age.

The candelabra are in good condition, with no breaks or restoration. The painted decoration has some small losses, as pictured. They bring a gentle, decorative touch to a mantelpiece, a dressing table or a dining table set for candlelight.
