Vintage Pair of Silver-Tone Three-Light Candelabra, Baroque Style Lobed Bases and Scroll Arms, Low Table Height, 19.5 cm
A candlestick holds one candle, while a candelabrum branches out to hold several. On the European dining table, candelabra were usually set out in pairs, one towards each end, so that the light was shared evenly among the guests. Low candelabra were especially prized for this, because their flames sat below eye level and never blocked the view across the table.
This pair of three-light candelabra is made for exactly that. Each rises from a broad, lobed base, shaped in soft waves, to a turned baluster stem. From the stem, two S-shaped scrolled arms curve out and up, and a third candle holder crowns the centre. Each holder is a fluted, urn-shaped cup with a removable rim, called a nozzle, which catches dripping wax. The design is Baroque in spirit, with its rounded, rippling forms, and the silver-tone finish reflects the candlelight warmly.
The candelabra are in good condition, with a few fine scratches from use, and they would benefit from a polish. They have clearly lit many dinners, and they are ready to light many more. Set at either end of a dining table, they give a soft, low glow perfect for conversation.
