Vintage Pair of Single-Light Mirror Wall SconcesCartouche-Shaped Mirrors in Two-Tone Metal Frames with Palmette Crests, 29 cm

The nineteenth-century Parisian apartment often had a cabinet de toilette, a small dressing room tucked off the bedroom, with just enough space for a washstand, a chair and a mirror. These rooms were usually narrow and dim, and a small mirrored wall light was the perfect answer: one candle or bulb, doubled by the glass behind it, lit the face without crowding the room.

This pair of single-light mirror sconces suits that kind of space beautifully. Each frame is shaped like a cartouche, rounded at the shoulders and narrowing to a point at the base, with curling scrolls at the corners and a small palmette crest at the top. The metal has a two-tone finish: a dark patina in the hollows of the moulding, with the raised edges polished bright, so the frame looks drawn in light and shadow. A short curved arm springs from the base of each frame to hold a drip pan and a candle cup with a drip-effect sleeve, set just in front of the glass.

The sconces are in good vintage condition. The mirror plates are clear, with a small dark spot near the edge of one, as pictured. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They are ideal either side of a dressing table, a bathroom mirror or a bed.

In short, this is a vintage pair of single-light mirror wall sconces, with cartouche-shaped mirrors in two-tone metal frames with palmette crests. Each measures 29 × 20.2 cm, and they are exactly as pictured.
