In the 1850s and 1860s, Parisian taste rediscovered the French Renaissance. The châteaux of the Loire were restored, and the ornament of François I’s reign came back into fashion: strapwork, cartouches and, above all, carved masks with flowing beards and leafy hair. Makers of decorative metalwork borrowed these faces for clocks, furniture mounts and small lighting fixtures, giving modern interiors a touch of sixteenth-century drama.

This pair of small double candle holders carries that Renaissance spirit. Each has an elongated oval backplate, pointed at both ends and decorated with raised scrolls and small leafy finials. At the centre is a bearded mask with a furrowed brow and a curling moustache. It is flanked by two small, tulip-shaped candle cups wrapped in leaves, with a fan-shaped ornament behind. The cups have openings about 1 cm across, sized for very slim candles. The gilt finish is bright and crisp in the raised areas.

The pair is in good condition, with a warm patina and some signs of age, as pictured. Their small scale makes them versatile.
