Vintage Pair of Small Louis XV Style Gilt Metal Two-Arm Wall Sconces with Shell Crest

Small sconces are made for tight spaces: a narrow hallway, a guest bathroom, or the wall either side of a small mirror.

Each sconce has an oval back plate with a raised central panel, crowned with a fan-shaped shell and finished below with a leafy drop. Two leafy scrolled arms reach out to the sides, and each holds a wide, scalloped drip pan and a cream candle sleeve with a wax-drip effect. French designers of the Louis XV period put scallop shells on almost everything, from chair backs to clock cases. The shell suggested water, garden grottoes and the sea.

The sconces are in very good vintage condition, with light wear to the gilding. They have stayed together as a matched pair and are ready for their next wall. Hang them in a hallway, a bedroom or a small dining room.
