Vintage Pair of Space Age Smoked Glass and Chrome-Tone Wall Sconces

In the 1970s, light fittings started to look like they had come from a film about the future. This pair, with curved panels of smoked glass around a bare chrome frame, comes from that moment.

Each sconce has a central oval panel of smoked glass with a curved panel on each side, all held to a chrome-toned bracket by small square clamps. The panels stand slightly apart, so light escapes through the gaps as well as through the glass. Smoked glass gets its warm grey-brown tint from small amounts of metal oxides mixed into the molten glass, which soften and colour the light passing through it.

The sconces are in very good vintage condition, and the old wiring reaches us as found. They have stayed together as a pair since the 1970s and are ready for a new wall. They suit a living room, a bedroom or an entrance hall with a mid-century or modern look.

Smoked-glass pair: two Space Age wall sconces with curved smoked glass panels on chrome-toned brackets, rewired and sold as a pair.
