Vintage Pair of Swing-Arm Candle SconcesGilt Metal Faux-Bamboo Arms on Fluted Rosettes, Piano Style, 19 cm

In the nineteenth century, the upright piano became the centrepiece of the middle-class parlour, and with it came a practical problem: how to light the music. The answer was a pair of swing-arm candle sconces fixed to the front of the piano, one on each side. Each arm could be swung forward to light the page or folded back out of the way, and the same design was also used on walls and beside mirrors.

This pair of candle sconces follows that swing-arm design. Each has a round wall plate with a scalloped edge and radiating fluting, fitted with a socket for the arm. The arm is shaped like a length of bamboo, jointed at intervals and sprouting small leaves. This faux-bamboo look was a fashion of the nineteenth century, inspired by the craze for Chinese and Japanese decoration. At the end of each arm sits a wide, leaf-decorated drip pan and an urn-shaped candle cup trimmed with garlands. The gilt finish is warm and bright.

The sconces are untouched, with fine scratches and marks of use, as pictured. They are true candle sconces, not electrified. They make a charming pair beside a piano, a mirror or a dressing table, where candlelight suits them best.

In short, this is a vintage pair of swing-arm candle sconces in gilt metal, with faux-bamboo arms on fluted rosettes. Each is 19 cm long, and they are exactly as pictured.
