The pricket is older than the candlestick with a socket. In medieval churches and great halls, candles were pressed down onto a sharp metal spike rising from a drip dish, a simple design that could hold candles of any width. Today the pricket is ideal for thick pillar candles, which sit firmly on the spike and burn for hours.
This pair of tall candlesticks uses that ancient idea with a strong, modern profile. Each stands on a round, weighted base that flows up into a slim column with crisp faceted sides, narrowing and swelling in an elegant curve. Bands of fine rings mark the top and bottom of the column. At the top, a wide, shallow dish catches dripping wax, with a sharp spike at its centre to hold the candle. The silver-tone finish has softened in places with age, giving a gentle, lived-in sheen.
The candlesticks are in good vintage condition, with light signs of use, and they stand very steadily. One base has a felt pad underneath, and the other shows bare metal. With a pair of pillar candles, they make a striking statement on a mantelpiece or at the centre of a dining table.
